Objectifs

The purpose of this course is to provide with some basic knowledge on the management of organizations. The course is designed to help students gain an understanding of the behavior of individuals and groups within the organizational setting. Understanding the management of organizations is crucial as we all live in a world of organizations, in which we are constantly influenced by and influence.

This course provides a foundation in the principles and key concepts of management theory and practice. The goal is to survey the 4 major principles of management -planning, organizing, controlling, and leading- as well as the underlying behavioral theories concerning people at work within organizational environment, related to individual needs, group behavior, leadership styles and dynamics of team.

This subject introduces students to the key concepts of management and 4 domains of management are explored: self, others, organisations and eco-systems. Managing self includes topics such as personal motivation, engagement, creativity and purpose. Managing others looks at working in teams, conflict, diversity and leadership. Managing organisations explores the role of organizations, the creation of new businesses, the pursuit of competitive advantage, and the role of social purpose and responsability. Managing eco-systems includes topics such as value chains, innovation, and stakeholder management. Students will be introduced to management theory, research and case studies that will develop their ability to manage complex real-world business problems, and to create a workplace where people can thrive.

Learning objectives
At the end of the module, students should meet the following learning objectives:
1.  Demonstrate an understanding of the meaning and use of terms related to managing, planning, organizing, leading, and controlling functions
2.  Demonstrate an understanding of the personal challenges involved in becoming a manager and a leader in today's turbulent and complex environments
3.  Demonstrate an understanding of management and leadership practices as applied to all type of organizations.
4.  Demonstrate an understanding of the application of socially responsible behaviors

At the end of this course, students should be able to:
1.  Articulate an understanding of management in organizations today and describe the basic theories and models within management and review real life examples of these models.
2.  Apply management major theories and concepts through case analysis and group projects to analyse organisational problems and generate realistic solutions and recommendations and build critical thinking skills by analyzing how management can be used to achieve employee and organizational objectives.
3.  Analyse the key factors in the external and internal environments that affect the management of an organisation and evaluate their influence on contemporary management issues
4.  Appraise management frameworks with regards to their impact on organisational performance and identify and critique management approaches
5.  Develop skills in the following areas: problem solving and analytical skills, collaborative learning and team-work skills, verbal and written communication skills
