Making decisions with passion: for who, why and how? 7th Conference of the “Philosophy and Management” Cycle

Published on November 12, 2016 Updated on March 7, 2018

A dialogue between a philosopher and a manager. With Florence Poivey, President of the Federation of Plastics Processing and Composites (Fédération de la Plasturgie et des Composites) and Jacques-Emmanuel Ottavi, philosopher and consultant.

7th debate of the “Philosophy and Management” Cycle organized by iaelyon - University Jean Moulin and built in partnership with “Acteurs de l’Economie - La Tribune”.

Being able to decide. This is probably the most crucial notion but also the most distressing one for a manager. How to make the right decision when facing a problem? What criteria can you rely on? Do we have to be fair? Efficient? How can we deal with the consequences? Should we take responsibilities through to the end? Can we turn back? Philosophy has made decision-making one of its key notions because it is through deciding that we build and transform the world…

To answer this question, a debate is organized between:

  • Florence Poivey, President of the Federation of Plastics Processing and Composites
  • Jacques-Emmanuel Ottavi, philosopher and consultant for Dianoia Conseil, intervening at the CHELS (College for Advanced Studies, Lyon Sciences)

The debate will be moderated by Bernard Jacquand.

The cycle of dialogues “Philosophy and Management”

Responsibility, innovation, ethics, prospective, work… can philosophy shed light on current managerial questions? So far philosophers and managers did not talk to each other very much. Nowadays, it seems interesting to allow them to meet and cross their points of view on what might become a challenge in the future: combining philosophy and competitiveness, humanism and effectiveness? Growth and wisdom…

What bridges can be found between the principles of philosophy and managerial methods? What solutions can be implemented to ensure that the act of “managing” linked to different complex human questions is performed in the light of the multiple principles of philosophy?

Helping philosophers confront their concepts with the practical experience of managers; helping managers be aware of some prejudices that condition their actions; this is the goal of the cycle of dialogues which confronts the speech of management and the speech of philosophy, and brings managers and philosophers to the same level.

This cycle falls within the socially sensitive and responsible Management carried out by iaelyon.
