Objectifs
Businesses today have a need and an obligation to consider their social and environmental responsibilities beyond profit maximization.
The links between economic growth, the finiteness of natural resources and their equitable sharing, including between generations, are central to the theories and practical examples presented. The interdependencies between ecological, social and economic dimensions are discussed to stimulate students' curiosity, for their personal knowledge and their future careers.
In particular, this course aims to improve students' understanding of climate change, and both individual and collective levers for mitigation and adaptation.
Estimation of private study (outside of contact hours): 10 hours
DIMENSION OF SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

- Knowledge of the key figures and orders of magnitude involved in the environmental transition

- Understanding their application to business by developing a critical analysis of how companies disclose their environmental objectives & achievements and manage the related risks.
- Understanding the concept of the depletion of natural resources, its consequences for businesses and, more broadly, for society as a whole.
- Understand the key issues and strategies of sustainable finance.

- Global carbon inequality.
- Dual carbon constraint: climate change and energy depletion; definition of oil & gas reserves, peak oil theory; Kaya’s identity.

- Externalities: definition, polluter pays principle, other tools for reducing externalities, common goods.
- Definition of natural capital and valuation of ecosystem services.
- Degrowth theory and link between GDP, energy and environmental damages; planetary boundaries and doughnut theory.

- How companies relate to double materiality and report carbon footprint (scopes 1, 2, 3 & 4).
- What is sustainable development (17 SDGs) and how companies refer to SDGs in their annual reports; Triple bottom line; Corporate Social Responsibility.
