Denise Potosky“It depends:” The important role of efficacy beliefs and goal orientation for individuals and groups in organizations

The belief that one “can do” with respect to goals has been associated with successful performance, but sometimes efficacy beliefs are associated with over-confidence. 
My research has found support for both observations, depending on when efficacy beliefs develop.  In addition, goal orientation, like efficacy beliefs, is associated how one behaves and performs.  Two studies investigated the moderating role of updating climate perceptions in the relationship between efficacy, learning goal orientation, and performance.  We will discuss findings from four different published studies that include these variables and discuss some directions for future research.
   

Moving from theory to methodology:  Measuring the role and impact of web-based media in technology-facilitated assessments

Very often, research that examines the impact of technology on organizational endeavors and human interaction refers to “the internet” or “web-based tools” as if these are unitary, contextually defined variables that can be labelled and considered, but not actually measured.  But if we view the internet (and other information technology) as a medium of communication, we can apply, measure, and even alter its attributes. Borrowing from a theory of the media used in assessment (Potosky, 2008), four attributes of web-based media can be evaluated: transparency, social bandwidth, interactivity, and surveillance. Further, these attributes can be measured in terms of their structural and dynamic features.  In this presentation and discussion, we will explore some ways to “measure the medium” in research that includes the internet, web-based tools, and other IT as variables. 

Pressures and motivations to publish management research

Business and management faculty are all too familiar with the publish or perish dictum, and pressures to publish in “top tier” outlets and the perceived rewards for doing so have created an exigency to rank journals, count and weight publication records, and evaluate faculty productivity.  Together during this presentation and discussion, we will examine the pressures and motivations to publish management research and explore various ways to identify and evaluate appropriate publication outlets.  We will take a look at the journal publication process and the roles of key participants in this process.  Finally, we will consider ways to effectively develop and manage a research publication agenda.
 

Biographical Statement:
 

Denise Potosky, Ph.D., is Professor of Management and Organization at the Pennsylvania State University, USA, and is a member of the Academy of Management, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and the American Psychological Association.
Her areas of expertise include human resource management, international / intercultural management, personnel selection and assessment, behavioral sciences research, and sustainable business development. As a Fulbright research scholar, she has investigated the influence of cultural differences on HRM practice and policies at the organizational level, as well as intercultural adjustment and competence development at the individual level. A notable area of her research has been the design and evaluation of computerized and web-based assessments, and she is recognized for her work regarding technology-facilitated selection processes as well as leadership processes during technological change.
Her research and consultancy in public and private organizations investigated the relationships between individual characteristics such as cognitive ability, personality, and self-efficacy beliefs and outcomes such as decision-making behavior, task or job performance, and adjustment. She has also examined group processes, climate perceptions, organizational culture, and change management in organizations.
