Objectifs

This course provides intermediate to advanced knowledge of English for Human Resources.
Students will explore the key functions of HR and discover specific vocabulary, idioms and buzzwords related to the field.
They will also research and discuss current HR issues.

Estimation of private study (outside of contact hours): 20 hours

TARGETED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS 

This course aims at providing students with the linguistic skills and cultural awareness needed to work in HR in an international context.
Students will work on improving all four language skills : reading, writing, listening and speaking.

COURSE OUTLINE

Session 1 :
An introduction to HR : key vocabulary 
Topical issue : use of tech in MGMT and HR (AI in recruitment, worker surveillance…)
Focus on HR functions : recruitment

Session 2 :
Topical issue : diversity, equity, inclusion
Focus on HR functions : selection

Session 3 :
Topical issue : discrimination/harassment
Focus on HR functions : employee relations

Session 4 :
Topical issue : work/life balance, WFH, part-time work
Focus on HR functions : HR development

Session 5 :
Topical issue : the Big Quit / Motivation / Job satisfaction
Focus on HR functions : reward and remuneration

Session 6 :
Topical issue : Gig work / Side hustle / Slashing 
Focus on HR functions : industrial relations

TEACHING METHODS

Sessions are organized in an interactive manner that integrates group work, debates, and other active learning exercises into the classroom.

A variety of tools and materials will be used through this seminar : authentic resources as well as didactic materials

TEACHING INNOVATIONS AND USE OF TECHNOLOGY

Digital tools are used to make students active during classes, as well as to assess their understanding of a given topic and to help them memorize specific vocabulary.

PRE-REQUISITES IN TERMS OF KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Students should have prior knowledge of general Business English 

ADVISED PRIOR READING

We strongly recommend students stay informed regarding to business issues. 
Reading economic newspapers will give them extra keys to better understand companies' operations and constraints so they can fully grasp the environnement HR professionals operate in (e.g. The Conversation, The Economist, Harvard Business Review, etc.).
Looking into specialized HR academic and professional journals will also help students refine their knowledge of current HR issues.
