Executive DBA Business Science Institute - iaelyon: 46 dissertations defended in 2023, 1st DBA in France
Edited by the FNEGE (Fondation Nationale pour l’Enseignement de la Gestion des Entreprises – National Foundation for Business Management Education), the “Observatoire des thèses 2024” (Monitoring Agency for Dissertations 2024) makes a list of 324 PhD dissertations in Business Management which were defended in 2023. It also lists 205 DBA defenses, of which 22% are produced by the Business Science Institute (BSI) with the iaelyon.
Since 2018, the FNEGE includes the DBA in its “Observatoire des thèses en sciences de gestion” (Monitoring Agency for dissertations in Business Management). The number of defenses listed – which have shown a strong growth in recent years – illustrates a better reporting of information from institutions but also the development of this diploma.
The 205 DBA dissertations for the year 2023 were realized in 16 institutions, of which 4 are Universities. With 46 dissertations defended, the DBA Business Science Institute – iaelyon places itself well in the lead.

The DBA, an innovative program intended to managers who wish to create knowledge and to publish it
The Executive DBA is intended to managers, to business executives and to consultants holding a high-level of experience in Business, who wish to create knowledge and to publish it. The Executive DBA is different from the traditional PhD by its more pragmatic approach as well as keeping a necessary conceptual requirement. As an “executive program”, it emphasizes the integration of Management theory and its practical aspects in a company.
The Business Science Institute program is the only DBA to have created a collection of publications written by the Professors and the Doctors”, highlights Michel KALIKA, President of the Business Science Institute and Professor emeritus at the iaelyon School of Management.”
200 PhD students-managers coming from more than 50 countries
The program is organized face to face and remotely, in French, English, Spanish and German. It currently counts about 200 PhD students-managers coming from more than 50 different countries. Groups are organized in Europe, Africa and Asia.
